At 13,460 feet (some have corrected that to 13,460 ft), a few hundred feet lower in elevation than Mauna Kea's summit on Pu`u Wekiu (above and behind me -- we are facing south), this huge cinder cone is on of the favorites of snowboarders when it has this much snow. A larger image here

Regarding the quality of this image, y' gotta cut me some slack here. I shot this scene using a hand-held Nikon-S, loaded with Kodachrome film, and the shutter speed, even at f1.4, couldn't have been any faster than 1/4 second, if that. The image was somewhat blurry to begin with, so I Ortonized it and then removed the Orton effect from the gal to help her stand out a bit (not that she needed any help

Most pictures of waterfalls in Maui, Hawaii are taken from aircraft or near roads. My son's roommate grew-up in Hana, Maui and took us on a nearly two hour hike through thick, mosquito infested jungle brush and waste deep streams to this secret Garden of Eden location. Very few people have ever seen the waterfall from this perspective. Note one of the boys at the bottom of the waterfall.

The Hawaii Theatre Center, a.k.a. The Pride of the Pacific, is an old movie palace in downtown Honolulu, now converted into a performance venue. My old masters at the Hawaii International Film Festival help maintain the 35mm projectors for occasional screenings.

Clear skies would have been nice to walk under, but the mood would have been gone and the light would have been harsh. Hanalei Bay is a 3-mile long perfect crescent of sand surrounded by the world’s rainiest mountains. Over 500 inches of rain drench nearby Mt. Waialeale every year and about 100 inches fall on this beach. 5 of the 7 famous waterfalls can be seen here.

Elvis Statue in Hawaii : A life-sized, 1,100-pound bronze sculpture of Elvis Presley was unveiled today on the grounds of the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. The 6'2" music icon is depicted atop a pedestal, commemorating his 1973 "Aloha from Hawaii" concert. It was a major television milestone, broadcast live, globally, to over a billion people in over 30 countries. The statue was donated by TV Land.

Kilauea Falls, Kauai, Hawaii : On my first of two days in Hawaii last weekend we had to take a look at an amazing waterfall (basically hidden from sight) from a lot of land that was for sale. These lots look over a valley down to this gorgeous waterfall. We decided we'd try to find our way down to it when we saw a local family walking that way. We asked if they knew the way and they just happened to be going there themselves and led the way.

To Hawaiians, the whale is a representation of the Hawaiian god, Kanaloa - the god of animals in the ocean. A large percentage of the North Pacific Humpback whales migrate to the main Hawaiian islands during the winter months, November through May, each year. The round-trip distance they travel during this annual migration is approximately 6,000 miles, one of the longest migration distances of any animal species. During their stay in Hawaii, they do not feed, but rely upon stored energy. Near the islands, the whales devote most of their time to mating and giving birth to their calves.
